Breast Feeding Tips

  • To bring in milk supply, offer both breasts with each nursing - 10 minutes on first breast and up to 15 minutes on the second breast
  • Once milk supply is in, allow baby to nurse as long as they want on the first breast, offer second breast if interested
  • Alternate which breast you start on
  • Signs of adequate milk supply
    • 3 or more yellow, seedy bowel movements per day
    • 6 or more wet diapers per day
    • baby appears satisfied after feeds
  • Never warm breast milk in the microwave!
  • Thaw frozen breast milk in the fridge and use within 24 hours
  • Fresh breast milk can be stored:
    • fresh at room temperature (66-72 degrees Fahrenheit) for 4-6 hours
  • Store milk in 2-4 ounce amounts to reduce waste
  • Exclusively breast fed babies should be taking a vitamin D supplement
  • Continue breast feeding even if sick (practice good hand washing)
  • Consult your pediatrician before taking any medication while breast feeding
